150 Locomotives from Bihar to Power Guinea Project

India's Marhowrah Diesel Locomotive Factory in Bihar has secured a landmark export order to supply 150 Evolution Series diesel locomotives to Guinea in West Africa. The deal, valued at approximately Rs 30 billion (USD 360 million), positions India as a rising exporter of rail equipment.

The first locomotive was flagged off on 20 June 2025 by the Prime Minister during a ceremony in Siwan, marking the first-ever export of Indian-built diesel engines to Africa. These 4,500-horsepower locomotives, part of a joint venture with Wabtec, will serve the TransGuinéen Railway supporting Guinea’s Simandou iron ore project.

Established in 2018, the Marhowrah factory has already delivered more than 700 locos to Indian Railways. With this export agreement, it cements its transformation into a global manufacturing hub. The plant has a capacity to produce 100 locomotives per year, with export deliveries scheduled to begin shortly and continue through to 2028.

This breakthrough strengthens India’s “Make in India” and “Make for the World” vision, enhancing Bihar’s industrial profile and generating employment. The export reinforces bilateral ties with Guinea and showcases Indian engineering prowess on the global stage.

The nod from Marhowrah for global rail exports highlights the momentum India has gained as a manufacturing and export powerhouse in rail infrastructure.
