The fate of the Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) proposed for the 125.65-km Thiruvananthapuram-Chengannur stretch hangs in balance with Railways making it clear that the RRTS needs an exclusive line and cannot operate on an upgraded rail network. As per reports, railways have informed the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) that a third up-and-down line is needed and operating customised EMU trains along the existing line will hamper the speed and operations of mail and express trains.
