ABB supports Kolkata Metro with electrification systems

Kolkata Metro has adopted ABB’s electrification and motion-control solutions to improve efficiency, reliability and safety across its expanding urban transit network. The partnership between ABB and Kolkata Metro has continued for 25 years, supporting operations across underground and elevated corridors.

ABB’s solutions deployed across the network include low-voltage and medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear, lightning protection systems, distribution boards and variable frequency drives. These systems are used across stations and tunnels to optimise space, reduce downtime, support power distribution and enable safe ventilation.

The 72-km Kolkata Metro network operates more than 300 train trips daily and serves over half a million passengers. ABB said its HVAC-dedicated packaged drives help manage cooling and ventilation systems, supporting passenger comfort, emergency smoke extraction and average energy savings of around 25 per cent.

ABB’s technologies have been installed across several Kolkata Metro corridors and facilities, including Sealdah-Phoolbagan, Joka-Majerhat, Barun Sengupta-Nazrul Tirtha, Airport, Shahid Khudiram, Blue Line corridors, Dakshineswar, Baranagar, Metro Railway Bhavan and Jai Hind Bimanbandar station.

The company said more than 80 per cent of metro networks in India use ABB technology. Its local manufacturing and innovation initiatives under Make in India are aimed at supporting modern, sustainable and future-ready public transport infrastructure.
