NABARD, MAHAPREIT partner on rural green infrastructure

NABARD has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology (MAHAPREIT) to finance and promote green, climate-resilient infrastructure in rural India, with an initial focus on Maharashtra.

The partnership will combine NABARD's expertise in rural development and climate finance with MAHAPREIT's experience in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. The collaboration will identify, develop and finance projects aimed at strengthening village infrastructure, Panchayati Raj Institutions and other community assets.

Priority areas include renewable energy projects, decarbonisation of government buildings, gram panchayat infrastructure, rural public institutions and water pumping schemes. The initiative also covers clean energy deployment at technical education institutes, government hospitals, district hospitals and other public service institutions serving rural communities.

The partners will also explore financing for biogas and bioenergy projects using agricultural residues and biomass, creating additional income opportunities for farmers while supporting the circular economy. Solar-powered micro cold storage infrastructure for village-level bodies has also been identified as a focus area.

Dr Shaji Krishnan V, Chairman, NABARD, said the partnership aligns with the institution's commitment to supporting sustainable rural development and advancing green infrastructure across the country.
