Aizawl Gains Rail Link With Completion of Key BG Line

In a landmark step for regional connectivity, Aizawl has become the fourth state capital in Northeast India to be connected to the national railway network, following the commissioning of the 51.38-kilometre broad gauge line between Sairang and Bairabi.

The Northeast Frontier Railway confirmed the development after the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Sumeet Singhal, conducted a final inspection from 6 to 10 June on the 33.86-kilometre final stretch from Hortoki to Sairang. The comprehensive inspection involved foot patrols, motor trolleys, and speed trials using a diesel-hauled train, after which the CRS authorised the route for both passenger and freight operations at speeds of up to 90 km/h.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway, stated that trains would commence service once final clearance is received from the Central government. A formal inauguration is also anticipated shortly.

The Hortoki–Sairang section posed significant engineering challenges, comprising 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges. Despite the complex terrain, officials praised the engineering teams for delivering high-quality results, culminating in the completion of the entire Bairabi–Sairang project.

The full route includes 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and six road underbridges, with a total tunnel span of 12.85 kilometres. The railway line was constructed in four segments: Bairabi–Hortoki, Hortoki–Kawnpui, Kawnpui–Mualkhang, and Mualkhang–Sairang.

“This is not just a feat of infrastructure, but a transformative step for Mizoram,” said Sharma. “It enhances both passenger and cargo transport and fulfils the long-standing aspiration of bringing railway services to the state capital.”

The commissioning of this strategically vital route reaffirms Indian Railways’ commitment to inclusive development in remote and difficult-to-access regions, advancing both connectivity and economic potential across the Northeast.
