Cabinet Clears Rs 36.3 Billion Pune Metro Line-2 Extension

The Union Cabinet has approved an investment of about Rs 36.3 billion to extend Pune Metro’s Line 2, boosting east–west connectivity between the city centre and fast-growing suburbs. Announced on 25 June, the decision will deliver 12.75 kilometres of new track and 13 stations, serving areas such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi and Wagholi.

Corridor details
  • 2A: Vanaz – Chandani Chowk
  • 2B: Ramwadi – Wagholi/Vitthalwadi
These links build on the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor and form part of Pune’s expanding 33.3 km metro network, with a further 33 km already under construction.

Benefits
The extension will connect key residential, educational and IT hubs, cutting journey times and easing traffic on major roads. By offering a reliable, low-carbon alternative to private vehicles, it supports Pune’s rapid population growth and aligns with India’s wider aim of sustainable urban mobility. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that India now ranks among the world’s three largest metro networks by length.
