Delhi Metro surpasses pre-covid passenger levels

In a remarkable resurgence, Delhi Metro has consistently exceeded its pre-Covid passenger numbers over the past six months. From March to August this year, there was a remarkable surge in passenger journeys, exceeding 100% when compared to the same period in 2019. The highest growth rate was observed in June, reaching an impressive 114.3%.

Data from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reveals that in August 2019, passenger journeys were recorded at 5.24 million but dropped to 2.33 million in August 2021. However, they rebounded to 4.48 million in August 2022 and further surged to slightly over 5.9 million in August 2023, reflecting a staggering increase of 112.5% compared to August 2019.

A DMRC official commented, "The data illustrates the pattern of how the Metro not only regained but also exceeded its pre-Covid passenger journeys."

Similarly, the months of March, April, May, June, and July this year witnessed substantial increases in passenger journeys at 109.9%, 106.9%, 111.3%, 114.3%, and 108.1%, respectively, in comparison to the same period in 2019.

DMRC defines a 'passenger journey' as the number of Metro lines used by a passenger to complete their journey. However, ridership data includes the total number of tickets sold and Metro cards used by commuters to exit a station.

Delhi Metro also achieved its highest-ever passenger journeys on September 5, surpassing the previous record in just six days. The previous record was set at 6.99 million on August 29.

Following the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020 and subsequent waves, Delhi Metro experienced a significant drop in footfall. Metro services were suspended due to the lockdown from March 22, 2020, to September 6, 2020, and from May 10, 2021, to June 6, 2021.
