Delhi to Karnal, Shahjahanpur RRTS Lines Ready to Roll Soon

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that detailed project reports (DPRs) for two new Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors — Delhi to Karnal in Haryana and Delhi to Shahjahanpur in Rajasthan — have been completed. These high-speed transit lines are expected to be operational within the next two to three years.

Khattar made the announcement during the 31st foundation day celebrations of Delhi Metro, highlighting the expanding role of public transportation in India’s urban development. He noted that Metro networks have become essential for city life and will grow even more important as urbanisation continues.

Speaking on the progress of the existing RRTS corridor, he stated that passengers can already travel from Delhi to Meerut in just 40 minutes using the Namo Bharat train. A segment between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and Meerut South in Uttar Pradesh is operational, and the entire Delhi–Modipuram stretch will be launched soon.

Khattar added that the DPRs for the Sarai Kale Khan–Karnal and Sarai Kale Khan–Shahjahanpur routes are ready, and work is expected to begin shortly. He also mentioned that four additional RRTS corridors are under planning and will soon be added to the growing rapid transit network.

To improve urban-regional connectivity, RRTS lines are being integrated with Delhi Metro via carefully designed interchange stations for smoother commuter transfers.

Stressing the importance of accessible public transit, Khattar proposed adding cargo compartments to Metro trains, which could help small vendors transport goods more efficiently and support local businesses by saving time and energy.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, also present at the event, praised Delhi Metro for its influence on civic behaviour and commuting culture. She recalled her college experiences with the Metro, calling it a fun and reliable travel option that instilled a sense of responsibility among passengers.

The event also featured the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) annual awards, honouring employees for their contributions. The Metro Adventure Club received a special award for its team-building efforts throughout the year.
