Indian Railways Launches New Train Services to Boost Firozepur Connectivity

Indian Railways has introduced several new train services in Punjab’s Firozepur region to strengthen the rail network and address long-standing demands for better connectivity to important religious and commercial destinations.

Starting from June, these new trains are expected to benefit thousands of passengers monthly by providing more direct routes, eliminating the need for long road journeys or multiple transfers.

The Firozpur Railway Division, part of Northern Railway, manages operations in this border area and plays a crucial role in enhancing rail connectivity across Punjab and neighbouring states. It handles both passenger and freight services, supporting trade, tourism, and regional development.

Key new trains include:
Firozpur Cantt–Hazur Sahib Nanded Weekly Express
Commencing operations on 13 June, this weekly train covers approximately 2,000 kilometres, connecting Punjab directly with Hazur Sahib Nanded in Maharashtra — one of Sikhism’s five Takhts. Departing every Friday afternoon, the journey takes nearly 38 hours, with AC and sleeper coaches catering to long-distance pilgrims and travellers. Previously, passengers had to travel via Ludhiana or Amritsar to reach this destination. A formal flag-off ceremony by Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu was cancelled due to the Ahmedabad plane crash; instead, an ardas was performed at the station.

Firozpur Cantt–Haridwar Weekly Express
Launched on 18 June, this weekly train links Firozpur directly to the holy city of Haridwar. Departing Wednesday nights and arriving the following morning, it provides a convenient overnight travel option for devotees and tourists. Earlier, passengers relied on routes via Ludhiana, Amritsar, or other cities.
Firozpur Cantt–Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali)

From 30 June, two daily trains resumed service between Firozpur Cantonment and Mohali — one in the morning and one in the evening. These had been suspended since April 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Sutlej Express (train numbers 14630/14629) departs Firozpur at 5:30 pm and reaches Chandigarh at around 10:40 pm, covering 236 kilometres in approximately five hours. The Chandigarh–Firozpur Cantt Express (train numbers 14614/14613) runs daily, departing Firozpur at 5 am and taking about 4 hours 45 minutes to reach Mohali. Both trains operate with general unreserved ICF coaches, providing economical and regular connectivity. Local leaders have requested the addition of two AC coaches and a chair car to these services.

Intercity Superfast Express
The Intercity Superfast Express, previously running between Moga and Delhi, will now start from Firozpur twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. While a decision to extend the service has been made, the Railways have yet to begin operations from Firozpur. Local leaders remain hopeful that the service will commence shortly.
These new train services mark a significant improvement in rail connectivity for Firozpur, enhancing access to key religious sites and commercial centres, and supporting the region’s economic and social development.
