Kanpur Metro Boosts Accessibility With New Lifts and Escalators

The third and final phase of the Kanpur Metro’s Corridor-1 aims to extend the line from Kanpur Central to Naubasta, covering seven stations: Jhakarkati, Transport Nagar, Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Basant Vihar, Baudh Nagar, and Naubasta.

To improve accessibility, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is rapidly installing 23 escalators and 26 lifts at these stations. Underground stations like Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar will each have three lifts and four escalators, while the elevated stations will feature four lifts and three escalators each.

All equipment is indigenously manufactured in Chennai under the 'Make in India' initiative, ensuring quality, supply chain efficiency, and local economic growth. The systems are eco-friendly—lifts feature regenerative braking for energy conservation, and smart escalators switch off when idle to reduce power usage.

Load testing is underway to ensure safety and performance. Each escalator is equipped with three emergency stop buttons, while automatic announcements will remind commuters to hold handrails—reinforcing passenger safety.

This infrastructure upgrade supports Kanpur Metro’s commitment to sustainable development and universal accessibility, setting a benchmark for future urban transit systems in India.
