Metro 3 Navy Nagar Extension Awaits Government Nod

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) finished its detailed project report in November2023 for extending the underground Metro3 corridor by fivekilometres to NavyNagar, yet the plan still awaits clearances from the state government and MMRCs own board. First announced in the 2022‑23 Budget by then deputy chief minister AjitPawar, the two‑and‑a‑half‑kilometre spur in each direction was requested by the naval authorities to serve the densely populated enclave of government staff housing and surrounding communities.

MMRC officials say construction of the new segment will begin only after the main 33‑kilometre Colaba‑BKC‑SEEPZ line is fully operational. At present, 22kilometres between Aarey and Bandra‑Kurla Complex are open, while trial runs, finishing works and integrated tests continue on the remaining stretch to CuffeParade and Colaba.

Once complete, Metro3 will weave together six business districts, 30 office clusters, 12 universities and colleges, 11 major hospitals, 10 transport hubs and 25 religious or leisure landmarks, while also linking both airport terminals. It will bring rail‑based transit to neighbourhoods such as Kalbadevi, NarimanPoint and BKC, which currently rely on congested roads.

The corporation estimates that 85percent of riders will switch from private road travel, trimming daily traffic by about 0.45million vehicle trips at launch and roughly 0.65million as capacity climbs.
