MSRDC set to launch Virar to Alibaug Metro route

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation [MSRDC] has begun working on a project to assess the feasibility of a metro rail stretching 136 km from Virar to Alibaug, marking a significant undertaking.

The metro railway line project is being considered to potentially become the longest in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region [MMR]. As part of the Rs 550 billion Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, which is designed as a 14-lane expressway with a speed limit of 120 kmph, the project aims to improve transportation efficiency and has a scheduled completion date of 2030.

The project consists of two phases. Phase I covers 98.5 km from Navghar to Balavali, while Phase II extends 129.9 km from Balavali to Alibaug. The multimodal corridor will integrate various modes of transport such as roads, rail, and metro.

The project will include 40 stations and will run parallel to this corridor, connecting crucial MMR suburban areas. According to official data from MSRDC, the detailed project report will follow the initial feasibility study, which is expected to conclude within 6-8 months. The metro line aims to connect the proposed Navi Mumbai airport and JNPA.

The authority's feasibility study is in line with the state government's consideration to hand over the corridor project with all the necessary clearances needed for implementation.
