NCRTC to build Jangpura station as transit hub on Delhi-Meerut RRTS

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has planned to develop the Jangpura station on the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor as a transit hub.

It would include space for commercial and residential complexes and additional amenities, for which a detailed plan would be created.

An official of NCRTC told the media that they invited bids to select a consultant to prepare an Influence zone plan so that Jangpura comes off as a transit-oriented development (TOD) node.

It would primarily focus on maintaining seamless connectivity with other forms of transportation, like last-mile connectivity, pedestrian-friendly zones, parking, urban furniture, and street vending zones, among other things. The proposed station and stabling yard will be combined.

They informed that the consultant would also map every existing facility and accordingly plan for the area’s development and take required approvals from each agency.

The previous year, NCRTC decided to expand its Delhi Meerut corridor, planned to begin at Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi, till Jangpura.

As per the initial plan, Anand Vihar, New Ashok Nagar, and Sarai Kale Khan were the only three stations in Delhi, including a stabling yard-cum-maintenance facility at Jangpura.

Besides the stabling yard, Jangpura station would also have an operation control centre to monitor and control the time-bound operation of trains on every three corridors.

Apart from Delhi-Meerut, NCRTC is also building Delhi-Gurugram-SNB and Delhi-Panipat corridors.

Other NCRTC officials also told the media that the Jangpura station would spread over 12 hectares and become a major transit hub providing a direct rapid rail link to South Delhi.

According to the tender document, the 800 m radius around the station would be constructed as per the TOD policy, and the area under the 500 m radius would have intense development (higher Floor Area Ratio).

The consultant would be required to develop a detailed traffic management plan for the area, as well as propose measures to ensure seamless connectivity with the road and mass transit networks around the station for up to 100 metres or to the next intersection of the road boundary beyond the TOD planning area.

The consultant would analyse the current development, structures, plots, encroachments, landmarks, Metro stations etc. and evaluate their use. An official said that it would include examining public amenities availability and street furniture, identifying activity patterns along with informal commercial areas, and use of public spaces.

The Delhi-Meerut corridor is one of the first of the three RRTS corridors NCRTC is developing. In 2019, the construction began on the corridor and is likely to be completed by 2025.

From the 82 km, 14 km would be built in Delhi, along with a 1.35 km long bridge on the Yamuna to connect New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan stations.

In February 2021, the construction started of the bridge, which would run parallel to the Delhi Noida Direct Flyway.
