Mormugao Port Seeks Rs 13 bn for Berth Nine Redevelopment

Mormugao Port has submitted a proposal seeking Rs 13 billion (bn) to redevelop Berth nine and deepen the approach channel to enable larger vessels to call. The request is aimed at modernising port infrastructure and aligning the port with evolving shipping trends and vessel sizes. The port authority has outlined the scheme in detailed formal documents and sought requisite approvals from relevant agencies. The proposal includes phasing and preliminary timelines for construction.

The redevelopment plan envisages dredging of the navigational channel and strengthening of the quay to support heavier berthing loads. It also includes upgrading berth handling equipment and navigational aids to improve safety and turnaround times. Authorities have indicated that technical studies and hydrographic surveys underpin the design and cost estimates for the works. The scheme is said to be designed to comply with applicable safety and environmental standards.

Port officials stated that the works would enable the facility to handle larger container and bulk carriers, thereby increasing cargo throughput and operational efficiency. Enhanced access for bigger ships is expected to attract additional liner calls and support regional trade growth by reducing unit costs. Stakeholders in logistics and industry were reported to have welcomed the initiative as a means to relieve congestion at neighbouring terminals. The upgrade is also intended to improve links with hinterland transport networks and streamline modal transfers.

The funding request forms part of a broader capital expenditure cycle for port modernisation and may draw on central allocations, internal accruals and partner investment. The project will require environmental clearances and coordination with coastal authorities before work can commence. The port continues to engage with maritime regulators and industry participants to finalise the implementation schedule and procurement strategy. Consultations with stakeholders and a realistic timeline for tendering are expected to follow in the coming months.
