Tata Group To Invest US$1 bn In Shipbuilding In Kerala

The Tata Group has sought state approval to invest Rs100 billion (Rs100 bn) in a shipbuilding project in Kerala, the state chief minister said. The chief minister said the group had requested land and that the state government was preparing to provide the site. He added that the administration was favourably considering the proposal and was likely to approve it within a month.\n\nThe investment would add a new line of business for the Tata Group, which the chief minister described as a conglomerate valued at US$180 billion (US$180 bn). The conglomerate already has interests ranging from coffee to luxury cars and from steel products to smartphones. Entry into shipbuilding would mark a strategic expansion of its industrial portfolio.\n\nKerala is seeking to capture more of the maritime value chain by expanding into shipbuilding, repair and related activities near ports such as Vizhinjam and Kochi. The state has been developing port infrastructure, with a new deepwater transshipment hub at Vizhinjam that has secured a US$1.4 billion (US$1.4 bn) commitment from MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. The MSC commitment is under review by the state administration.\n\nThe chief minister did not provide details on intended capacity or a timeline for the start of production. A Tata Group representative did not immediately comment on the proposal. Observers note that the move comes as India seeks to scale up shipbuilding capacity and deepen cooperation with key partners such as South Korea.\n\nOfficials expect the project to broaden local capabilities in ship construction and repair while supporting related services and logistics. The state government plans to position facilities to serve both domestic demand and global maritime trade. If approved, the investment would represent a significant private sector push into an area the government has identified as a priority.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to review National Highway and road infrastructure projects.
