VISL May Get Nod for Port Infrastructure Expansion

The government is set to deliberate on a proposal granting Vizhinjam International Port Limited (VISL) a more central role in the development of infrastructure surrounding the Vizhinjam Port. A project implementation committee, chaired by Chief Secretary Dr A Jayathilak, met on Monday to chart the way forward.
A favourable decision permitting VISL to acquire land for infrastructure could mark a major shift in port-driven development. “VISL can begin planning vital infrastructure even before gateway traffic commences,” said an official from the ports department. “We require container yards, terminals, logistics parks, and warehousing in place to handle large cargo volumes once the port becomes operational. However, final approval from the government is essential to initiate this.”
The officer also highlighted slow progress on related infrastructure, such as the Outer Ring Road. “This must be seen not merely as a road project but as a critical enabler for port operations,” they added.
At its 58th board meeting, VISL reaffirmed its commitment to building infrastructure that fosters port-led economic growth. The board has formally sought government approval to acquire around 100 acres of land near the port.
Meanwhile, a decision on rail connectivity to the port is expected soon. A VISL-appointed committee will assess the draft tender submitted by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) for the Vizhinjam–Balaramapuram railway line by month-end. If cleared, the project will include a 10.7-km line with a 9.43-km tunnel, poised to become India’s third-longest railway tunnel.
The planned railway link is expected to significantly ease cargo movement to and from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. VISL is also exploring the possibility of setting up a railway container terminal between Parassala and Neyyatinkara to further enhance multimodal connectivity.
