Vizhinjam International Port Adopts AI and Sensor Tech for Vessel Mgmt

The Vizhinjam International Port, situated in Kerala and managed by Adani Ports, is poised to revolutionize maritime operations by integrating cutting-edge sensor, radar, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The port is set to introduce an advanced Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) as part of a comprehensive Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) framework, which is designed to precisely track, coordinate, and manage the movements of incoming and outgoing container ships. Once fully operational, the system aims to streamline turnaround times, enhance capacity, and improve navigational safety.

The VTMS will depend on a robust network of radar systems, sensors, and AI technology to oversee ship movements. These technologies will offer a comprehensive view of vessel traffic by monitoring approaching ships in real time and transmitting their exact locations and movements to the port’s central control room. Ships in proximity will receive navigational updates, enabling optimized berthing assignments and smoother traffic flow within the port, thereby reducing congestion and delays.

A key component of this setup is the AI-driven control room, where data from radar, the Automated Identification System (AIS), CCTV cameras, Radio Direction Finding (RDF), VHF communication, and weather stations will be integrated and displayed on an electronic chart overlay. This integration will facilitate efficient ship traffic management and provide port operators with a clear, real-time view of vessel positions and conditions within and around the port. The control room is designed to anticipate and mitigate navigational hazards, providing decision support that can help operators avert potential incidents before they arise.

Given the geographical challenges faced by Vizhinjam, including its susceptibility to swells, the port's weather-monitoring capabilities will encompass tide gauges and wave and current monitors. These tools will provide essential data to ensure safe operations, especially during high-risk conditions.

During recent trial operations, Vizhinjam Port successfully demonstrated the capabilities of its advanced VTS by managing 29 vessels and handling over 60,000 containers within just one month. This trial highlighted the port's capacity to accommodate large motherships with minimal delays, thanks to its AI-supported infrastructure. The port is equipped with eight semi-automated ship-to-shore cranes and 23 automatic yard cranes, enabling the automated unloading of containers in just 10 minutes each, marking a significant time reduction compared to traditional methods.
