Vizhinjam Seaport Assigned New Location Code

The Vizhinjam International Seaport, which recently completed the first phase of its operations, received a new location code on Wednesday, according to the state Ports Minister, V N Vasavan. In a Facebook post, the minister explained that the change was made following a proposal from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for a new location code.

The initial location code for the international deep-water transshipment port was IN NYY 1, representing India and Neyyattinkara. The new location code is IN TRV 01, which stands for India and Thiruvananthapuram.

The minister added that, as the location code for Thiruvananthapuram, including the international airport, is TRV, the Vizhinjam port had applied for the same code since it operates internationally.

The new location code was approved on Wednesday by UNECE, one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations that promotes economic cooperation and integration among member states, Vasavan mentioned.

The code, allocated by the Directorate General of System and Data Management of the central government, will now be used for navigation and shipping, he said.

Developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), India's largest port developer and part of the Adani Group, the port was constructed under a public-private partnership model at an estimated cost of Rs 88.67 billion.

The port had received its commercial commissioning certificate on December 4.
