Defence Ministry to Develop Adilabad Airport With Civil Aviation Support

The Defence Ministry (DefMin), with support from civil aviation authorities (CAA) and the Telangana government (state government), is moving ahead with plans to develop the long proposed Adilabad airport as a joint-use facility. The project is being structured to accommodate both defence training operations and civilian passenger and commercial services on the same airfield. A joint inspection of the 300-acre site is scheduled in the coming days involving representatives from all key stakeholders.

Under the proposed arrangement DefMin will operate a training establishment while the CAA will oversee civilian flight operations and air traffic management. The approach aims to enable coordinated use of runways and supporting infrastructure to prevent operational conflict between defence and civilian aircraft. Officials indicated that design and layout will seek to balance security, training requirements and passenger service needs. Plans will consider runway length, apron and hangar facilities to meet both sets of needs.

Once the inspection is completed the project will proceed to preparation of a detailed project report that will set out technical specifications, infrastructure requirements and timelines. The report is expected to be prepared within two to three months and will guide final planning and execution. Budgetary requirements and timelines will be outlined in the report with input from all stakeholders. Stakeholders will use the assessment to determine any additional surveys or approvals required for dual use operations.

The Adilabad airport initiative has been under consideration for a long time as part of efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure in regions beyond Hyderabad. The current push places emphasis on improving regional air connectivity while also supporting defence training requirements through shared infrastructure. Planners highlighted potential benefits for northern Telangana including better access to remote districts and support for local economic activity. The next key steps will depend on inspection outcomes and subsequent approvals from relevant authorities.
