Coimbatore corp to buy 370 vehicles for door waste collection

To improve door-to-door garbage collection, the city corporation plans to add 370 light commercial vehicles to its existing fleet of 209 vehicles.

While each vehicle has the capacity to collect waste from 1,000 homes, officials estimate that 370 additional vehicles are needed to reach the 5.5 lakh homes and small businesses.

Not only does it save money, but it also reduces the amount of manpower required. According to the 2016 Solid Waste Management Rules, garbage should see fewer changes in hand, said corporation commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara to the media.

Currently, conservancy workers collect waste from homes using pushcarts. The collected waste is transferred to light commercial vehicles, increasing the number of people involved.

In 2022, they will concentrate on door-to-door garbage collection. Improved source-level segregation will also help to reduce dumping in the Vellalore yard. Sunkara said that they are monitoring the routes of the light commercial vehicles to ensure that they adhere to the routes.

To treat the waste they generate, bulk waste generators should set up their own composting units. The major bulk waste generators are apartments, hotels, and wedding halls. Those who are unable to set up composting units can work with one of the private agencies they have identified and pay a fee to have their waste collected.
