BMC plans real-time dashboard to improve waste management system

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to have a real-time dashboard that will show details of steps taken by the municipal corporation in every ward on garbage collection and disposal to improve waste management in the city.

The real-time dashboard will have information about the performance of bulk generators in waste management. It will also have daily updates on how much garbage each administrative ward is producing, collection, segregation, disposal, and steps taken by housing societies for treating their waste at the source.

Currently, Mumbai produces 6,500 metric tonnes of garbage daily, as per the data. According to the solid waste management (SWM) rules, 2016, the corporation is required to achieve waste management at source, decreasing the dependability on dumping grounds.

Part of the SWM rules mandated that each bulk waste generator — which means housing societies or commercial establishments — having an area above 20,000 square meters or producing 100 kg waste every day should treat their waste in their premises.

The purpose of beginning a real-time dashboard is to involve public participation. Anybody can see the waste management details of the city and can inform BMC if the rules are being followed or not. Citizens’ behavioral change is also necessary for the success of an effective city's waste management, said Dr Sangeeta Hasnale, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Solid Waste Management department.

BMC started a rebate in property tax — offering a 10% rebate in overall property tax bills to encourage housing societies to set up composting units.

The BMC had also launched a citizen survey asking responses on the civic body’s waste management to develop a vision plan for 2030. The BMC is now analysing the waste generated in nature.

As per the data, there are over 3,100 bulk generators in Mumbai. However, only around 50% are complying with rules.
