Cannon Artes wins UAE effluent plant contract

Cannon Artes, a leading global engineering and construction company specialising in the water treatment industry, has proudly revealed that they have secured a significant contract to construct an expansive Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) for one of the world's major polyolefin manufacturers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The announcement came during the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2023, which is taking place from October 2 to 5, 2023, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Cannon Artes shared details of the project, highlighting that the treatment plant's infrastructure will encompass an area equivalent to two football fields and will have the capacity to treat up to 5,000 cubic meters per day (5 million litres per day), a capacity akin to serving a city of a hundred thousand people. The plant's construction site is expected to be handed over towards the end of Q1 2024 and is set to become fully operational by the close of 2024. The financial terms of the contract remain undisclosed.

Alessio Liati, Sales Director at Cannon Artes, stated, "Every turnkey ETP project for the oil and gas industry we have delivered establishes Cannon Artes growing presence and expertise in designing, constructing, and installing highly complex infrastructure for treating and purifying industrial effluent. Our focus remains on energy efficiency, sustainability, and the recovery of reusable water. This substantial project demands maximum design capacity with an extremely challenging treatment process to remove oil and other contaminants, biological treatment, and filtration, ensuring that the effluent stream's concentration meets stringent regulations prior to its safe discharge into the environment."

The facility will handle four incoming influent streams containing various pollutants. To ensure flexibility, the ETP will comprise up to fifteen unit operations, each capable of addressing different physical and chemical variations resulting from upstream processes. It will be designed to adhere to strict specifications for organics, oils, suspended solids (TSS), phenols, nitrogen, and more.

The construction of the plant will adhere to the highest sustainability standards, aligning with the UAE's sustainability objectives. The UAE has implemented numerous sustainability strategies to transition towards a clean and green future, particularly considering the increasing demand for water and energy due to population and economic growth. The completed plant is expected to address these needs while also promoting the transition to a circular economy, encouraging resource reuse, recovery, and sustainable industrial wastewater management.

Pre-treatment unit operations will incorporate equalisation, coalescing plate interceptors (CPI), and dissolved gas flotation to remove suspended particles, oils, and fats from wastewater. Subsequent unit operations and processes, including biological oxidation through extended aeration technology and an advanced oxidation section for recalcitrant pollutants removal, will meet stringent criteria for biological and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD). A specialised dehydration system will further treat the resulting separated sludge.

Operating globally, Cannon Artes has an extensive track record of designing and installing custom ETPs and wastewater treatment (WWT) plants in over 80 countries for major global and regional players across various industries, including pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, and food and beverage. The company boasts over 40 years of extensive experience in multiple industries, including oil and gas, chemicals, and petrochemicals, with more than 20 years of specific involvement in the UAE.

Cannon Artes is currently exhibiting at Stand 2112 in the Italy Pavilion at Hall 2 of ADIPEC 2023 in Abu Dhabi.
