NMMC to supply recycled water at construction sites

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is planning to provide recycled water at construction sites and residential colonies for non-potable purposes such as gardening and washing vehicles.

The civic body is additionally set to provide 40 Million Liters Per Day (MLD) of tertiary water to industries in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) corridor along the Thane-Belapur belt from its Koparkhairane and Airoli tertiary plants. About 380 MLD of sewage is produced in Navi Mumbai and discharged into the creek after being recycled in the seven treatment facilities.

Once tertiary water is provided to industries in the MIDC area, they will try to find the possibility of rendering treated water for construction purposes, and other uses via laying of separate pipelines or tankers, Navi Mumbai municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar told the media.

Their engineering department has been told to achieve the feasibility study of providing treated water to residential societies and the construction industry from the sewage treatment facilities. They have obtained suggestions from residents that recycled water should be used for non-potable purposes to save drinking water.

Bangar told the media that this process could be provided to other areas too.The NMMC has achieved the work at the Koparkhairane plant which is ready to render tertiary water to units along the Trans- Thane Creek corridor. The Airoli facility will take a couple of months to be achieved, said Bangar, who has asked his ward authorities to notice how recycled water can be used best.

As the city is likely to observe tremendous construction given the redevelopment projects and infrastructure works in the pipeline, recycled water could ideally be utilised. The treated water can be put to good, non-potable use via one-time investment, as per NatConnect Director B N Kumar, who appreciated the NMMC for its pro-environment action.
