How Afcons reduced construction time at Chhara by 9 days

At LNG Tanks, Chhara, the major scope of work included the construction of two LNG storage tanks (outer diameter 89.6 m and inner diameter 88 m). The tank construction entailed the construction of a prestressed concrete (PC) wall, 37.36 m high, to be constructed in 10 lifts. The team was able to reduce the cycle time of the PC wall construction for Tank 2 by 25 per cent (nine days) compared to Tank 1 by adopting LPS, 5S and waste elimination practices. PC wall activities involve multiple teams interfacing with each other: rebar fixing, H beams for compression ring support, laying prestressing ducts, VTL and HZT embedded plate installation, formwork installation, etc.

  • Minimising transportation and multiple handling by stacking rebar mats, links, vertical and horizontal inserts close to the corresponding area of the PC wall
  • Work sequence standardised and coordination meetings at the start of the day to minimise interference between multiple teams Analysis of variance in planned versus actual progress to identify root causes of delay
  • Design modification in TCP plate connections to minimise rework and improve speed of alignment.
