Coal production rises 16% during Apr-Dec period of FY23

In comparison to the 522.34 million tonnes produced during the same period previous year, India's coal production increased by 16.39% to 607.97 million tonnes between April and December of this fiscal year.

According to official sources, Coal India Limited (CIL) reported a 15.82 percent increase in production as 479.05 million tonnes of dry fuel were generated up to December this fiscal year as opposed to 413 million tonnes produced during the same period last year.

According to sources in the coal ministry, increasing mining from captive coal blocks has led to an increase in production.

In accordance with the MMDR (Amendment) Act of 2021, the Ministry also changed the Mineral Concession (Amendment) Rules of 1960 to permit lessees of captive mines to sell up to 50% of the total excess production of coal or lignite after satisfying the requirements of the end-use plants.
