India Achieves One Billion Tonne Coal Production for Second Year

India has achieved one billion tonne (bn t) coal production for the second consecutive year, the Coal Ministry said, attributing the milestone to sustained and coordinated efforts across the sector and the contribution of multiple stakeholders. The achievement comes amid heightened uncertainty in global energy markets following the West Asia crisis and is said to have supported the power sector in meeting rising demand. Officials noted that higher output has underpinned record coal inventories at thermal plants.

The ministry said proactive policy measures, close performance tracking and active engagement with stakeholders have ensured dependable coal availability and smooth operations across sectors. It indicated that strong planning, efficient execution and tighter coordination across the coal value chain were central to the outcome and added to the nation's economic growth momentum. The ministry framed the results as aligning with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Officials emphasised that continuity of supply has been critical to maintaining power sector stability and to meeting industrial and domestic energy needs. They observed that the sustained output has helped build resilience against international supply disruptions and has contributed to energy security. The ministry indicated that it will continue to focus on transparency, performance orientation and risk management to sustain production levels.

The ministry said it will pursue further measures to enhance domestic production capabilities and to support a resilient energy framework while engaging with state bodies and industry participants. It noted ongoing monitoring of stocks and logistics to ensure timely coal evacuation and availability at thermal plants. The ministry also signalled that policy initiatives will remain responsive to demand patterns and operational challenges in the short to medium term.
