India Energy Stack Version 0.3 Released for Power Sector Digital Push

The Ministry of Power recently announced the release of Version 0.3 of the India Energy Stack (IES) Architecture and Strategy documents, marking another milestone in building a digital public infrastructure for India’s power sector.

The India Energy Stack seeks to establish a common digital framework that enables secure data exchange and interaction among utilities, system operators, market participants, innovators and consumers through shared standards and protocols. The framework is designed to improve coordination, transparency and operational efficiency across the energy ecosystem.

The updated Version 0.3 documents reflect ongoing efforts to design, test and refine the framework through phased development, stakeholder consultations and pilot implementations. The initiative is being advanced through ecosystem collaboration, with a national rollout planned to support a more reliable, flexible and future-ready power system.

A key focus of the India Energy Stack is empowering consumers and prosumers. Through consent-based data sharing and interoperable digital services, consumers can access improved energy services, compare offerings and participate in programmes such as demand response and EV charging. Prosumers will be able to monetise surplus energy, verify transactions and engage more easily in energy markets, supported by trusted measurement, verification and settlement mechanisms.

The review meeting for Version 0.3 was chaired by Dr Ram Sewak Sharma, Former Director General of the Unique Identification Authority of India and Former Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, and was attended by senior representatives from regulators, utilities, industry bodies and think tanks.

The initiative is steered by REC Limited as the nodal agency, working closely with the Ministry of Power and supported by FSR Global as the knowledge partner. The India Energy Stack project is scheduled for completion by July 2026.
