India Leads Global Green Hydrogen Push: Minister Pralhad Joshi

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, has stated that India is at the forefront of the global green hydrogen sector. During a visit to the floating solar plant at Omkareshwar Dam in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa district, Joshi highlighted the government’s initiatives in renewable energy, including the launch of a tender for the world’s largest green ammonia demonstration project.

The minister also emphasised ongoing work on offshore wind power projects, with tenders invited in Gujarat. He explained that offshore wind power involves installing windmills at sea, necessitating upgrades to port and transmission infrastructure. While geothermal power is still in its nascent stages in India, Joshi noted that its development is also underway.

A "revolution" in solar energy is positioning India as a global leader in renewable energy, according to Joshi. He pointed to the 278 MW floating solar plant at Omkareshwar, which supplies electricity to the Delhi Metro, as a model for sustainable power generation. He urged other states and energy experts to visit and replicate the project in regions with large dams, unlocking an estimated 90 GW of potential solar power.

India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030 and 1,800 GW by 2047, aligning with its growing electricity needs through sustainable energy sources. Joshi underlined India’s ambitious renewable energy goals and reiterated the importance of achieving these milestones to lead the global transition to clean energy. (ET)
