India targets 15% natural gas share by 2030: Minister Teli

India is embarking on an ambitious journey to raise its current 6% share of natural gas in its energy mix to an ambitious 15% by 2030, driven by Minister of State Rameswar Teli in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. This audacious goal is underpinned by a comprehensive road map laid out by the minister in a Lok Sabha response.

The strategic plan to achieve the 2030 target encompasses crucial actions:

1. National Gas Grid Pipeline Expansion: A significant expansion of the National Gas Grid Pipeline will ensure efficient natural gas distribution nationwide.

2. City Gas Distribution Network Enhancement: Expanding the City Gas Distribution network is pivotal for providing reliable gas sources to urban and suburban areas.

3. Establishment of LNG Terminals: LNG Terminals will be set up to import and store liquefied natural gas, meeting surging demand.

4. Domestic Gas Allocation for CNG and PNG: Steady domestic gas allocation for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in transportation and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for households ensures stability.

5. Market and Pricing Freedom for Specific Gas Sources: Granting marketing and pricing autonomy for gas from diverse sources promotes exploration and utilisation.

6. Promotion of Bio-CNG through SATAT: The Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative champions eco-friendly Bio-CNG as a transportation fuel.

Strategic partnerships further amplify India's efforts:

1. Indian Oil's Agreement with Total Energies: A significant deal secures the supply of up to 0.8 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of LNG from Total Energies Gas and Power for a decade, commencing 2026.

2. Indian Oil's Collaboration with ADNOC LNG: Another milestone partnership with Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company Ltd. (ADNOC LNG) entails the supply of up to 1.2 MMTPA of LNG over 14 years, starting 2026.

Minister Teli's leadership and these strategic initiatives underline India's dedication to reshaping its energy landscape, fostering sustainability and growth through heightened natural gas utilisation.
