Low Uptake for DHBVN prepaid metre scheme

Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (DHBVN) has observed low consumer interest in its prepaid meter initiative, with less than 1% of city consumers, about 650 out of 0.37 million, opting for the scheme. Of the 0.25 million consumers with smart meters under DHBVN's smart grid project, only a fraction have chosen the prepaid billing feature. Consumers who switch to prepaid billing receive a 5% energy bill discount.

Smart meters, equipped with wireless data connectivity, enable remote power disconnection for non-payment. The 'Smart Metre’' app facilitates the shift to prepaid billing after registration. Officials emphasise the benefits of these meters, including minimising technical losses and aiding energy consumption auditing.

For consumers, prepaid options reduce billing disputes and offer real-time energy monitoring. Recharge through the app is possible, and daily energy usage can be tracked to manage costs effectively. Auto disconnection on holidays does not occur. Pradeep Agarwal, a consumer, noted that prepaid billing resolved disputes with tenants, enhancing payment accountability.

As DHBVN looks to encourage more participation, the prepaid system not only enhances billing accuracy but also empowers consumers to regulate their electricity consumption efficiently.
