PM Launches POWERGRID Renewable Transmission Projects in Andhra

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated two transmission projects and laid the foundation stone for a third implemented by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, a Maharatna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Power in Andhra Pradesh. Senior central and state leaders attended.

The projects have been developed to evacuate renewable energy generated in the Kurnool and Ananthapuram renewable energy zones and to enhance the capacity of the transmission network serving the region. The dedicated schemes comprise the transmission system for the Kurnool wind energy zone and solar energy zone, part A and part B, developed at an investment of Rs 35.47 billion. The other dedicated project covers the solar energy zone in Ananthpuram of 2,500 megawatt (MW) and Kurnool of 1,000 megawatt (MW), developed at an investment of Rs 8.23 billion.

The foundation stone was laid for the transmission system for integration of the Kurnool-IV renewable energy zone, phase I, to enable the integration of an additional 4.5 gigawatt (GW) of renewable capacity. That scheme is being developed at an investment of Rs 55.50 billion and will strengthen the transmission network to carry power from the renewable zones into the national grid. Officials described the investments as central to expanding regional evacuation corridors and reducing congestion on existing lines.

The commissioning of the two projects alongside the foundation stone laying marks a step towards strengthening India’s clean energy infrastructure and supporting the nation’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel based installed capacity by 2030. The transmission systems are intended to facilitate the transfer of renewable power across states and to accelerate the clean energy transition by enabling greater utilisation of wind and solar resources.

As on 30 June 2026, Power Grid had commissioned and was operating 291 substations, 186,595 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 634,516 MVA of transformation capacity. With adoption of advanced technologies, enhanced automation and digital solutions, Power Grid has maintained transmission system availability of over 99.80 per cent, which underpins grid reliability and supports scale integration of variable renewable generation.
