Tamil Nadu Power Demand Hits Record 21,724 Megawatt

Tamil Nadu's electricity demand reached a fresh all-time high of 21,724 megawatt (MW) on Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of 21,629 MW set one day earlier. Despite the higher peak, the state's overall power consumption stood at 453.447 million units (MU) on Tuesday, well below the record daily consumption of 471.456 MU registered on 24 April 2026. The back-to-back records reflect a rapid rise in peak demand over a short interval and have focused attention on system preparedness.

Officials said the latest peak was unusual because demand normally peaks in April and May and typically declines with the onset of the southwest monsoon. They observed that it is uncommon for new maximums to be set in July. The timing contrasts with established seasonal patterns in the state. Such variability challenges routine seasonal planning and underlines the need for adaptive management of the grid.

They attributed the surge to prevailing heatwave conditions and below-normal rainfall in several areas, which led to greater use of air-conditioners, coolers and other electrical appliances and thereby higher consumption. Renewable energy continued to play a significant role in meeting the demand, with 167.240 MU of the total consumption supplied from renewable sources, mainly wind and solar power. Improved wind generation with the onset of the windy season helped the state meet the record demand without major difficulty, officials added. Officials noted that balancing the system with higher renewable shares required close coordination between generators and grid operators.

Enhanced renewable output reduced reliance on more costly conventional generation for the peak. Grid managers said they are monitoring conditions closely as the combination of sustained high temperatures and variable monsoon rainfall may influence demand patterns in the coming weeks. The development underscores the growing contribution of wind and solar to balancing the system during atypical seasonal demand. Authorities said they will continue to assess data to inform operational decisions and any consumer advisories.
