Google to Invest USD 15 Billion in AI Hub at Visakhapatnam

Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, hailed Google’s new AI Hub in Visakhapatnam as a transformative milestone for India’s digital economy. Speaking at the ‘Bharat AI Shakti’ event hosted by Google, he said the Hub would mark a new era of AI-first infrastructure, supported by clean energy and subsea connectivity, while generating high-value employment nationwide.

The Minister emphasised that the facility aligns with the India AI Mission’s goals and urged Google to focus on skill development and job creation. He encouraged the company to support India’s talent base by expanding access to its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and fostering industry collaboration.

Highlighting connectivity opportunities, Shri Vaishnaw proposed developing a Vizag–Sittwe digital link to strengthen North-East India’s digital infrastructure and suggested turning the Andaman and Nicobar Islands into a major international data hub. “The Government of India will fully support making Andaman a global internet transfer hub,” he stated.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu described Google’s USD 15 billion investment—the company’s largest in India—as a “new chapter in India’s digital transformation journey.” The Visakhapatnam AI Hub will house a gigawatt-scale data centre, renewable energy systems, and a new subsea gateway connecting India to global networks.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the Hub will deliver advanced AI infrastructure to accelerate innovation, enhance inclusivity, and strengthen Indo-US collaboration in responsible AI development.

The initiative supports India’s Viksit Bharat Vision 2047, positioning Visakhapatnam as a key node in global digital and AI ecosystems.
