ADB approves USD 181 mn loan to build infra

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced its approval of a substantial USD 181 million loan to fund the development of high-quality infrastructure and essential services aimed at enhancing urban livability and mobility within the peri-urban regions of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The Ahmedabad Peri-urban Livability Improvement Project is set to encompass an ambitious scope, including the construction of a 166-kilometer water distribution network, a 126-kilometer climate-resilient stormwater drainage system, 300 kilometers of sewerage systems, and the establishment of four sewage treatment plants. This extensive undertaking aims to bolster the resilience of the region's infrastructure and address critical water management and environmental concerns.

Additionally, the project is geared towards enhancing connectivity by supporting improvements at ten key junctions along the existing Sardar Patel Ring Road, thereby facilitating smoother integration of the peri-urban areas with the city of Ahmedabad.

The ADB's involvement extends beyond financial support, as it will also play a pivotal role in enhancing the capacity of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority and local urban bodies. The focus is on technology-based urban planning, including the implementation of climate change and disaster-resilient infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on promoting environmental and social safeguards, gender equality, and social inclusion.

This significant investment underscores the commitment to advancing urban development and improving the living conditions of residents in the peri-urban areas of Ahmedabad, ultimately promoting the region's sustainable growth and resilience.
