Anil Agarwal highlights delegation in leadership

Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal has shared a leadership lesson from his entrepreneurial journey, highlighting the importance of delegation in building a scalable business. In a recent post on X, he reflected on how losing a major deal early in his career changed the way he approached leadership and business growth.

Agarwal recalled that during the early years of building his business, he managed almost every responsibility himself, from speaking to buyers and visiting suppliers to handling banking work. He believed that working continuously and personally overseeing every task was the right path to success.

However, a missed deadline cost him an important business opportunity, becoming a defining moment in his journey. The setback taught him that sustainable growth is not achieved by doing everything alone, but by building capable teams and trusting them with responsibility.

The experience led him to hire his first munshi, marking the beginning of a leadership approach focused on delegation, empowerment and long-term thinking. Agarwal said leaders must focus on strategic priorities while allowing others to take ownership of operational responsibilities.

His reflection carries a broader message for entrepreneurs and business leaders managing high-growth organisations. As companies scale, leadership must move beyond daily operations towards creating systems, developing people and making decisions that shape long-term value.
