DU Clears Rs. 58.89 bn Hostel Plan for 21,895 Students

Delhi University has approved hostel projects valued at Rs. 58.89 bn to provide accommodation for 21,895 students, while several previously announced facilities remain delayed. The proposal was cleared at the university’s 1,284th Executive Council meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, and will be sent to the Union Ministry of Education for grant approval.

The expansion includes new hostels costing Rs. 40.27 bn, with space for 15,758 students. A further Rs. 18.62 bn has been allocated to reconstruct Jubilee Hall and the Postgraduate Men’s Hostel, which would provide accommodation for 6,137 students after redevelopment.

New facilities are planned at the Dhaka Complex, Veer Savarkar College in Najafgarh, West Campus in Dwarka and East Campus in Surajmal Vihar. The redeveloped Jubilee Hall is planned to accommodate 3,795 students, while the Postgraduate Men’s Hostel would have capacity for 2,337 students.

The approvals come as seven earlier projects face delays linked to funding constraints and construction difficulties. At the Dhaka Complex, a girls’ hostel and studio apartment complex estimated at Rs. 2.33 bn, along with a hostel-cum-residential block costing Rs. 3.18 bn, has a targeted completion date of December 2028. The Nirbhaya Residential Accommodation Project’s estimated cost has increased from Rs. 2.72 bn to Rs. 4 bn, with funding still awaited from the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.

Other projects, including an executive hostel and an extension of Geetanjali Girls’ Hostel, are scheduled for completion by June 2028. Extensions to the Saramati and Aravali boys’ hostels and a new South Campus hostel have been placed on hold because of construction challenges in the Ridge area. Delhi University has 251,474 students in conventional programmes but only 7,224 official hostel beds, including 3,688 undergraduate and 3,536 postgraduate beds. More than half of its students are estimated to come from outside Delhi, although accommodation requirements vary.
