Government Expands GeM Access for MSMEs and Start-ups

The Government has introduced new initiatives to expand the reach of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) for micro and small enterprises (MSEs), start-ups, and women entrepreneurs. Key changes include marketplace filters and product catalogue icons that highlight products from these groups, reduced vendor assessment fees for OEMs, and exemptions from caution money payments.
MoUs have been signed with organisations such as Laghu Udyog Bharati, FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), and SEWA to create forward market linkages for women entrepreneurs, self-help groups, artisans, and farmers. GeM has also launched eight “#vocalforlocal” outlet stores to promote ODOP products and farmer-producer organisations.
API integration with the Udyam MSME database has been introduced for simplified seller registration. GeM is also participating in exhibitions, fairs, and roadshows to raise awareness.
A study by IIT Delhi found that GeM reduced procurement and advertising costs, improved transparency, and facilitated easier market access for marginalised groups. Stakeholders expressed positive feedback on GeM’s role in promoting inclusivity and supporting the Make in India vision.
