IEX Electricity Prices Rise 19 Per Cent As Trade Volumes Increase

India's largest power exchange reported stronger demand in July 2026, with monthly electricity traded volume rising seven point seven per cent year-on-year to 13,527 million units (mn). The exchange said the rise in demand drove buy bids in the day-ahead market and supported higher spot prices across segments. Overall monthly volumes reflected a broad-based increase that market observers linked to firmer consumption amid seasonal variations.

Day-ahead market (DAM) buy bids rose 42.5 per cent and the average market clearing price in DAM increased 19.3 per cent to Rs four point nine nine per unit. The real-time market price stood at Rs four point four one per unit, up 15.1 per cent. In June the spot price in DAM had risen 32 per cent to Rs five point two per unit, while traded volumes in June were 12,210 million units (mn).

DAM volumes, including High Price-DAM, fell seven point seven per cent to 5,087 million units (mn) from 5,510 million units a year earlier. RTM volume rose to 5,631 million units (mn) from 5,109 million units, registering a 10.2 per cent increase. Volumes in the IEX green market, comprising Green Day-Ahead Market and Green Term-Ahead Market segments, increased zero point nine per cent to 1,035 million units (mn), while the weighted average price in G-DAM declined 4.2 per cent to Rs three point seven five per unit.

Renewable energy certificate volumes fell 56.3 per cent year-on-year to zero point seven one one million (mn). India's energy consumption in July rose 11 per cent to 170.70 billion units (bn). The exchange characterised the monthly outcome as driven by higher demand and shifting segmental flows, with the interplay of conventional and green supplies shaping prices and trade volumes.
