Osaka Expo 2025 to Feature World’s Largest Wooden Structure

Osaka Expo 2025 will showcase the world’s largest wooden structure—a spectacular canopy encircling the 155-hectare exhibition grounds. Designed by architect Sou Fujimoto, the structure combines cutting-edge technology with Japan’s thousand-year tradition of wooden construction to create a futuristic yet sustainable landmark.
“This is the biggest wooden construction in the world, so we used the latest technology alongside Japan's ancient craftsmanship to achieve a futuristic design,” Mr Fujimoto said. Rigorous testing ensured the strength of the beams and joints for the immense structure.
Themed ""Designing a Future Society for Our Lives,"" Expo 2025 aims to inspire innovations in health, medicine, and sustainability. Japanese officials confirmed that the wooden ring would serve as a lasting legacy for Osaka, symbolising the Expo’s vision for the future.
The event marks Osaka's second time hosting the World Expo, following its debut in 1970 as Asia’s first host city. Mayor Yokoyama Hideyuki emphasised the Expo’s role in revitalising Osaka’s infrastructure and cultural appeal. “This will be the first Expo on the sea,” he noted. “The wooden ring is a key part of our future vision and the intangible legacy of the Expo.”
With participation from over 160 countries, Expo 2025 is set to leave an indelible mark on Osaka and the world.
