Scindia Inaugurates 100th N-Gen Post Office At NEHU Shillong

Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia virtually inaugurated the 100th N-Gen Post Office of India Post at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong on six May 2026. The upgraded facility has been developed as a modern, youth-centric postal space designed to serve students, faculty and campus residents. The project aims to combine traditional postal functions with digital services and social engagement.

N-Gen Post Office spaces within educational institutions include free Wi-Fi, QR-based booking and payment systems, dedicated student service counters and concessional parcel and mail services. The initiative also seeks to revive letter writing and to foster a sense of community among campus users. Student participation in design and outreach has been described as central to the initiative’s success.

The Union Minister observed that India Post is evolving in line with the aspirations of a young and dynamic nation and that the N-Gen initiative represents a broader vision of transforming traditional postal spaces into digitally enabled service hubs. He noted that the programme began six months ago with the revamp of the IIT Hauz Khas post office in Delhi and has now reached the hundredth facility, covering institutions such as IITs, IIMs, NITs and central and state universities. The NEHU outlet has been curated with local materials including bamboo and straw to reflect Meghalaya’s cultural ethos.

At NEHU the Union Minister highlighted that the post office is led entirely by women, underscoring the role of Matrushakti in advancing the vision of Viksit Bharat and reinforcing women’s participation in public service delivery. Students contributed to artwork and the visual identity, making the space co-created and co-owned by the campus community. Campus users reported enjoyment of the upgraded amenities and atmosphere, with design inputs reflecting Shillong’s musical culture. The Department reaffirmed its commitment to expanding N-Gen reforms nationwide to ensure postal services remain accessible and relevant to young people.
