TRAI Assesses Telecom Quality via Drive Tests in 6 LSAs

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its latest report on Independent Drive Tests (IDTs) conducted in February 2025 across six diverse Licensed Service Areas (LSAs): Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, UP-West, Gujarat, and Odisha. These assessments covered a mix of cities, highways, railway routes, and coastal zones.

The IDTs were carried out by a TRAI-appointed agency to evaluate the quality of voice and data services offered by major telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel, BSNL/MTNL, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea. Networks using multiple technologies—2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G—were tested.

Test Locations Included:

Andhra Pradesh LSA: Hyderabad and highway route from Visakhapatnam to Brahmapur Himachal Pradesh LSA: Shimla city and railway route Kerala LSA: Alappuzha city and backwaters UP-West LSA: Dehradun city Gujarat LSA: Rajkot city Odisha LSA: Railway route from Brahmapur to Bhubaneswar and coastal area of Paradeep

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Assessed The IDTs assessed several parameters to gauge the user experience, including:

Voice Services:

Call Setup Success Rate Drop Call Rate (DCR) Speech Quality (MOS - Mean Opinion Score) Uplink and Downlink Packet Drop Rate Call Silence Rate Coverage (Signal Strength %) Data Services: Uplink and Downlink Throughput Packet Drop Rate Video Streaming Delay Latency Jitter

The results reflect the real-time performance of the telecom service providers in the tested areas during the day and time of the drive tests. These insights are crucial for enhancing service delivery and consumer satisfaction in the telecom sector.

TRAI remains committed to ensuring high standards of telecom service quality and transparency through such periodic and data-driven assessments.
