U-Turn and Lane Changes Planned to Ease Barapullah Congestion

The Delhi government is examining a dedicated U-turn on Ring Road near the Gurudwara to ease congestion around Barapullah Phase-III. The Public Works Department is also considering lane channelisation and other traffic-management measures after congestion was reported on the newly operationalised corridor.

The proposed U-turn, or cut, would give residents of Siddharth Extension direct access to the Old Barapulla approach road towards Lajpat Nagar, INA and AIIMS. Officials said the arrangement would reduce the need for longer diversions and discourage unsafe movements by local motorists.

PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the department had discussed short- and long-term solutions with the Delhi Traffic Police. The measures under examination include better use of available road space and smoother movement between Sarai Kale Khan, Ring Road and ITO, where traffic from different directions merges at key points.

The department is also coordinating with Google Maps to reflect the new traffic patterns and road connectivity on the navigation platform. The minister said the platform generally takes around 15 days to update its mapping for a road, with the revised route information therefore due shortly.

The project, built at a cost of around Rs. 16.35 bn, connects Mayur Vihar Phase-I on Noida Link Road with Sarai Kale Khan on Ring Road. Approved in 2014, construction began in April 2015 against an original completion target of 2017, but the corridor faced prolonged delays before becoming operational.

The PWD is planning to appoint a traffic and structural design consultant to assess the corridor and recommend further interventions. The minister attributed the project’s technical specifications and design decisions to the previous Aam Aadmi Party government, while the department continues to examine measures intended to separate local traffic from the larger flow using the corridor.
