Bengaluru Airport unveils 'Tiger Wings' green wall in Terminal 2

Bengaluru Airport's Terminal 2 has added a new highlight: the 4,000-square-foot ‘Tiger Wings’ green wall, created by botanist Patrick Blanc. This impressive 30-foot-high, 160-foot-wide vertical garden is filled with over 15,000 plants from 153 native species, sourced from Bengaluru nurseries and the Western Ghats.

The hydroponic wall, designed to resemble a tiger in bloom, is expected to reach its full visual impact within three months. Sharat Marar, chairman of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), expressed excitement about the unique installation, which leverages Blanc’s global expertise in vertical garden projects, including Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Blanc emphasised the use of native Indian plants, contrasting it with typical green walls that often feature Western species. His design incorporates a sustainable, low-maintenance hydroponic system that mimics natural rock faces, creating an ideal habitat for a diverse plant ecosystem. The wall not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the terminal but also improves air quality and contributes to a cooler environment in the airport. (HT)
