Driverless Metro Line Set to Launch in Bengaluru by August

Metro operations between RV Road and Bommasandra on Bengaluru’s Yellow Line are expected to commence in August, with safety inspections currently underway. The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) began a comprehensive inspection on Tuesday, which included a motor trolley examination of the tracks.
This 18.8-kilometre stretch, which connects South Bengaluru to the Electronic City IT hub, marks India’s first deployment of CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) driverless train technology on the Namma Metro network. Due to the advanced system, there is heightened scrutiny of speed regulations, track curves, station halts, and signalling infrastructure.
The corridor comprises 16 stations and will significantly enhance connectivity between South Bengaluru and the city centre, thanks to its interchange with the Green Line at RV Road. The fourth train, necessary for commercial launch, is expected to arrive in early August. Final assessments, including load testing and signal trials, are planned shortly thereafter. If all tests are successful, services may commence by the third week of August, with trains expected to operate at intervals of 25 minutes.
