Gadkari Approves Rs 14.2761 Billion Thiruvarur Bypass Project

The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways approved Rs 14.2761 billion (bn) for the construction of a four-lane Thiruvarur bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83, covering 14.9 km and including two additional road over bridges on NH-129A and NH-134A.

The funding was announced via the minister's social media platform and comes under central government allocation for national highway development. The project is intended to strengthen connectivity between several industrial and port towns in the region.

The bypass will commence at Adiyakkamangalam and Thandalai and will pass through Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi and Anaivadapathy Colony among other locations. The alignment has been planned to connect with State Highway 23 and State Highway 65 to improve regional linkages. Project design also accounts for traffic diversion to reduce congestion in urban centres.

Authorities estimate that the bypass will significantly decongest Thiruvarur town by diverting through traffic away from densely populated and commercial areas, thereby enhancing road safety. The scheme will reduce travel time along the corridor by approximately 15 minutes and facilitate smoother freight movements to nearby ports. Planners note secondary benefits for local commerce and commuting patterns as a result of improved access.

The ministry regards the investment as part of wider efforts to boost infrastructure and economic activity linking Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore with the port towns of Karaikal and Nagapattinam. The alignment will also improve access to the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple and other local destinations, supporting both pilgrimage and tourism travel. Construction timelines and implementing agencies were not specified in the announcement.

The funding forms part of the ministry's ongoing national highway development programme and is intended to support capacity and safety improvements across the state. Further details on procurement schedules and project execution were not provided in the release.
