MCG Flags Defects in Rs. 30 mn South City 1 Road Project

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has identified five defects in the recarpeting of internal roads in South City 1 and directed the contractor to complete repairs within three days. The project, estimated at Rs. 30 mn, covers roads in blocks I to Q, where residents had reported deterioration within weeks of the work beginning.

An inspection conducted by the civic body identified improper scraping of existing surfaces, inadequate brooming and cleaning, insufficient thickness of the bitumen macadam layer, uneven road levels and inadequate bitumen content in the mix. The findings followed complaints from residents about loose gravel, cracks, uneven patches and construction debris on the roads.

The recarpeting work began around October 8 and is scheduled for completion by November 7. A spot inspection found stones scattered across stretches of the internal roads, with dust accumulating on the surface and sections appearing uneven. Residents also reported that the newly laid roads had started breaking up in parts and alleged that the base layer had not been properly prepared before recarpeting.

A group of residents met MCG joint commissioner Ashish Singla after raising concerns about the quality of the work. Singla directed executive engineer Sandeep Dhundwal to examine the matter. Dhundwal then asked the concerned sub-divisional officer and junior engineer to inspect the roads and assess the work.

Following the inspection, MCG issued a letter to the contractor setting out the deficiencies and ordering corrective action within three days. The civic body said further action would be taken under the contract if the contractor failed to address the defects. The directive comes before the scheduled completion date, requiring repairs while the wider recarpeting project remains under way.
