NHAI Completes DPR for Elevated MG Road Corridor to Andheria Mor

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed a detailed project report (DPR) for upgrading MG Road between the Haryana border and Andheria Mor in Delhi. The proposal includes an elevated section of about 4.5 km, while the remaining portion would continue at ground level. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 9.8 bn.

The DPR has received internal approvals and will be sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for final clearance. Tenders will be invited after the ministry grants approval. The Haryana portion of MG Road, between Iffco Chowk and the state border, is about 5 km long, while the stretch from the border to Andheria Mor is about 8.5 km.

NHAI has also appointed a consultant to prepare a feasibility report for upgrading the Gurugram section. The study will examine road widening and the construction of elevated sections where feasible. Limited space and the presence of metro stations along the route have been identified as key challenges, while a traffic survey will assess vehicle volumes and congestion levels.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) currently maintains the Gurugram section after taking over responsibility from the Haryana Public Works Department. In March, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways assigned MG Road to NHAI and designated it as a highway. NHAI is also examining ways to connect the road directly with the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, allowing traffic bound for Manesar and Jaipur to access the highway more efficiently.

MG Road experiences heavy congestion during peak hours, particularly near Iffco Chowk. During a recent inspection, the GMDA chief executive officer directed officials to examine the redevelopment of Iffco Chowk, an additional foot overbridge near the malls and a grade separator near Sikanderpur. The proposed measures are intended to improve traffic movement while longer-term decisions on the road’s redevelopment are evaluated.
