NHAI santions Rs 331 cr for Trichy flyovers

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has allocated Rs 331 crore to develop multi-level elevated corridors near the upcoming Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur in Trichy. A new flyover will facilitate uninterrupted vehicular movement on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway (NH), connecting southern districts with Trichy and Chennai.

A separate but shorter flyover has also been approved on the Thanjavur-Karur Semi-ring Road, intersecting the Trichy-Madurai NH at Panjapur. Both flyovers will handle vehicular movement simultaneously on two different levels.

With various infrastructure facilities planned in Panjapur by Trichy Corporation, including a new bus terminus, truck terminal, Tidel Park, regional Olympic training academy, and a wholesale vegetable market, the NHAI Trichy Project Implementation Unit (PIU) emphasises the importance of flyovers to prevent traffic bottlenecks. NHAI will develop a 3 km long flyover on Trichy-Madurai NH, the longest ever on a highway passing through Trichy city.

The four-lane elevated structure between Koraiyar River bridge and Vinayaga Nagar in Panjapur will allow Madurai and Chennai-bound vehicles to bypass the floating population in the new bus terminus and vegetable market. A separate 750-meter-long flyover is sanctioned on the Thanjavur-Karur Semi-ring Road, facilitating seamless traffic between Jeeyapuram on Karur NH and Thuvakudi on Thanjavur NH. At the intersection, the Trichy-Madurai NH flyover will operate on the first level, while the shorter one will be built at a higher elevation.
