NHAI to use 3D AMG technology for highway construction

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will use 3D Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) technology for highway construction to speed up the pace of construction and enable the officials to get live updates of the construction process.

The Kanpur-Lucknow expressway of 63 km will be the first highway project to use AMG technology.

Minister of Defense Rajnath Singh and Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, will lay the foundation stone of the highway project worth Rs 4,200 crore. It will reduce commuting time between both the cities by 40 minutes. This highway project is expected to be completed by December 2023.

The 3D AMG system utilises data from 3D engineered modules to guide construction equipment during earthwork and paving. It directs the operations of the machinery and improves the speed and accuracy of the construction process.

According to an official, the technology integrates with a computer within the cab of construction equipment with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to relay position information from the GNSS receivers.

The computer assesses the actual position of the machine relative to its location in a proposed computer-generated model of the project. The operator uses this information to control the machine's equipment. The computer is linked to the machine hydraulics for controlling the operation with minimum input from the operator.

NHAI has chosen the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway project to implement the system and will be implemented further in the highway sector.
