Govt Identifies 15 Stations for Redevelopment Under PPP Model

In an effort to modernise India's railway infrastructure, the government has identified 15 stations out of 1,337 for redevelopment under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha.

While responding to queries from DMK MP C N Annadurai, the minister stated that Rani Kamalapati station in Madhya Pradesh has already been developed and commissioned under this model. However, details regarding the financial model, revenue-sharing mechanisms, and private sector involvement remain under evaluation, given the complex and iterative nature of project formulation.

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme: A Long-Term Vision The broader Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to upgrade 1,337 railway stations across India with a phased approach, enhancing station access, waiting halls, circulating areas, lifts/escalators, sanitation, free Wi-Fi, and overall passenger experience.

Vaishnaw emphasised that station redevelopment under PPP involves additional complexities related to business models and financial structuring. The ministry continues to explore optimal frameworks to ensure long-term benefits for both passengers and private investors.

With station modernisation high on the government’s agenda, the PPP model is expected to play a crucial role in transforming India’s railway hubs into world-class transit points
